I haven't stopped sewing though, and have been mostly making work appropriate shirts (read: soooo many <a href="https://shop.grainlinestudio.com/products/archer-button-up-shirt" target="_blank">Archers</a>)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwr4E6VHgYzG3QsHoGOVPf6ewGxWw9iYEZDp1BsvJ5XWax07wjcK-oIzchy8_xDlvdPVZDsVNJQKNII7I2rzZIxCMpYdWlsnkMaa1bbxZ9-lFxE54SuXt-cwPVMEMh5KGqe_TMGFamZuY/s1600/DSCN1353.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwr4E6VHgYzG3QsHoGOVPf6ewGxWw9iYEZDp1BsvJ5XWax07wjcK-oIzchy8_xDlvdPVZDsVNJQKNII7I2rzZIxCMpYdWlsnkMaa1bbxZ9-lFxE54SuXt-cwPVMEMh5KGqe_TMGFamZuY/s400/DSCN1353.JPG" width="298" /></a></div>
I ordered a bunch of linen from <a href="https://shop.missmatatabi.com/" target="_blank">Miss Matatabi</a> and got the last meter of a beautiful blue Nani Iro linen, which came in on the same day Style Arc announced an Easter sale, so I snatched up a pdf copy of the <a href="http://www.stylearc.com.au/stylearc/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=965&category_id=5&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=39" target="_blank">Blair shirt</a>. I first saw <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BI-FYARjRXP/" target="_blank">Sophie from Ada Spagg's</a> version of the shirt and loved the outfit she put it with, so decided I'd give it a whirl.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmGPZtHQ_Qcce9GE5JFZZ7JKrluMuDFv7isqlpRbcSsW7JuMIutgIjUi_vmtMrMDBU51cku94S65He2sCll6T0-2-sqIbop5LcbWEyUgiSvEYPNUSungffO2HUQJqqSPsMTsr_0bXFyVc/s1600/DSCN1349.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmGPZtHQ_Qcce9GE5JFZZ7JKrluMuDFv7isqlpRbcSsW7JuMIutgIjUi_vmtMrMDBU51cku94S65He2sCll6T0-2-sqIbop5LcbWEyUgiSvEYPNUSungffO2HUQJqqSPsMTsr_0bXFyVc/s400/DSCN1349.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
One meter wasn't quiiittee enough to squeak out a full shirt, so I found a really similarly coloured linen to colour block the back upper piece. Worked out all right! I had to do away with the sleeve cuffs with such limited material, they're finished with white bias tape.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW3Nq5qSznGgzbGAfNC4HEYMdqNbXIC8NyZg3szmPM4RVKneWddkdIQVRYUPxXFG9EHwclvTpJjysEXLD3lfUfQFE_-cxDtfiZ3m63w3I_BIQ-_omXq535zT-M2DJbQ7Ti7IQoSfMpUz0/s1600/DSCN1351.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW3Nq5qSznGgzbGAfNC4HEYMdqNbXIC8NyZg3szmPM4RVKneWddkdIQVRYUPxXFG9EHwclvTpJjysEXLD3lfUfQFE_-cxDtfiZ3m63w3I_BIQ-_omXq535zT-M2DJbQ7Ti7IQoSfMpUz0/s400/DSCN1351.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
I really love the colours of this fabric, so spring appropriate! The linen from Nani Iro is amazing and so nice to work with, and I can't wait to use the other two colourways I got (for more collared shirts...)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This will definitely be a repeat pattern of mine! I may try to play around with the side seams and see if I can make a less boxy version, but I love the slight dolmen sleeve and the high cut side seams<br />

I haven't posted the results of my experimentation because I needed a willing photographer to take a few shots. After a relatively short canoe trip with my daughter Emma, I conned her into taking some photos. I assume she was just grateful I didn't torture her with an long and arduous paddle. <br />
<br />
This pattern is great because it hides any bulges and rolls that might have accumulated over the winter months and provides a cool outfit for the hot summer days. The first attempt was using a dense polyester fabric trimmed with a 1950's retro pattern accent. Wasn't happy with the neck line, I changed it slightly on my next attempt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWqeItj1BUugWKvG3cgZTpLNUenI4hIu6FWt_jJIXOGBBn2FLJiIDSUQuhbs6sF0S4AqO_6F1wBkikehbzfevILIbT7VP4i8ly5ERsH3zkdLoIbARaxgPY7zYeR0miiaMH70idFWfWudg/s1600/P1000985.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWqeItj1BUugWKvG3cgZTpLNUenI4hIu6FWt_jJIXOGBBn2FLJiIDSUQuhbs6sF0S4AqO_6F1wBkikehbzfevILIbT7VP4i8ly5ERsH3zkdLoIbARaxgPY7zYeR0miiaMH70idFWfWudg/s320/P1000985.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Attempt number 2 was a plum linen that was a big hit although I wasn't happy with the size of the arm holes, they were too big. Must be changed next time around.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLwmpaFIBhol8DIL4pFtUCmlLkp_j-FlHWYcyFWGdnIxTIpBmp9bQOmrD6K6GiGwqev8frfT0WIVPKR8DWmROME6d_SihP-ofJALiDZmi4Yr-4uJ8KvPjPkIHUe96RYT4dRWaLfhS7kKo/s1600/P1000989.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLwmpaFIBhol8DIL4pFtUCmlLkp_j-FlHWYcyFWGdnIxTIpBmp9bQOmrD6K6GiGwqev8frfT0WIVPKR8DWmROME6d_SihP-ofJALiDZmi4Yr-4uJ8KvPjPkIHUe96RYT4dRWaLfhS7kKo/s320/P1000989.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Attempt 3 I used a wool jersey and cut up a jacket I no longer wore for the accent pieces. I also added cap sleeves to this version.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRga4mtUCH8_Q_PS_hRJpnS0oyiZFOeYPQ11ibT1UzQ64UX0f184ozbxgT8pM4UsjYVtrFGh2KXDm4XyUr7md6HPeyk-05t-lDKtfMhFoqSJc7XDP4BznEDs9MWOllfHeRODVb0Nda6N8/s1600/P1000992.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRga4mtUCH8_Q_PS_hRJpnS0oyiZFOeYPQ11ibT1UzQ64UX0f184ozbxgT8pM4UsjYVtrFGh2KXDm4XyUr7md6HPeyk-05t-lDKtfMhFoqSJc7XDP4BznEDs9MWOllfHeRODVb0Nda6N8/s320/P1000992.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next attempt I used a mixture of linen and a technical supplex fabric. I changed the top of the pattern to make it longer and wearable with just tights. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvCvn_mo7EbjT6wgfUW8fGTBkj1d3zqqjXHyfb9e6ZRQsqDa9b-03GpjRfuFUzUADl6gywkp_pLimqQ9rmKLR6PL8jV5xa0iQXQx0Yp12v04kyZ7DOTGqHpBxGIwwyoXDyifKPR95jI3s/s1600/P1000995.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvCvn_mo7EbjT6wgfUW8fGTBkj1d3zqqjXHyfb9e6ZRQsqDa9b-03GpjRfuFUzUADl6gywkp_pLimqQ9rmKLR6PL8jV5xa0iQXQx0Yp12v04kyZ7DOTGqHpBxGIwwyoXDyifKPR95jI3s/s320/P1000995.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

She has been on a collared shirt making kick recently and it inspired me to get moving on one for myself. She is a big fan of the <a href="http://shop.grainlinestudio.com/products/archer-button-up-shirt" target="_blank">Archer shirt</a>, so I bought the <a href="http://shop.grainlinestudio.com/collections/all/products/archer-popover-variation-pack" target="_blank">pull-over pack</a> and we did a swapsies<br />
<br />
Behold! My Archer:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD-SWzsz2oiEI613OK3GHqARWqz95l9Muj208djZX22fymkryAnyi_C0zKbIP8VjkDjUOpxHhhekUGde7DAjdx4wQVtANszea3YSENlUNxgXb2E3G9bWg6qthsQ1QLRT51cTQbB-T2yY0/s1600/DSCN0231.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD-SWzsz2oiEI613OK3GHqARWqz95l9Muj208djZX22fymkryAnyi_C0zKbIP8VjkDjUOpxHhhekUGde7DAjdx4wQVtANszea3YSENlUNxgXb2E3G9bWg6qthsQ1QLRT51cTQbB-T2yY0/s400/DSCN0231.JPG" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lookin' stunned, almost like I didn't set the self timer myself.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I found the fabric recently, and it was a bit of an inspired moment. I was at Affordable Textiles Ltd in Toronto looking for something completely unrelated and stumbled upon it. After being told by the guy at the front that he himself had a dress shirt out of the same stuff, I knew it was fate. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicjVQXg9VwUAyYO66FAx0U0NANQtlVhPxMoD5xHUR1JRq7mzrkbGxvxm-9b599qVn2A4G1gF0gIu4UXmdhOVfbxd-zD6dHwyt6Y3bRl0VovgNDrJtDSRG92M_dJ1pOrdaRDiIkTFPRcQE/s1600/DSCN0232.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicjVQXg9VwUAyYO66FAx0U0NANQtlVhPxMoD5xHUR1JRq7mzrkbGxvxm-9b599qVn2A4G1gF0gIu4UXmdhOVfbxd-zD6dHwyt6Y3bRl0VovgNDrJtDSRG92M_dJ1pOrdaRDiIkTFPRcQE/s400/DSCN0232.JPG" width="265" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">What do I do with my hands???</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I immediately thought of a 1/2 meter of quilting cotton I had in my stash that would look great as an accent. This took a bit of finicking with the placket but I made it work<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil7-K3GWCUXyfF1dawHBROboXzUR92p8JFzWkzu1Rw8ed83ckBG5V15uXZWCNWpByRydQHP4LwysNI05k4Ynm2QzYRJN5T9uh6Y-nLLhHwZ0LLN8fSiIeODwPtkN97bawHlkcx45vtfag/s1600/DSCN0234.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil7-K3GWCUXyfF1dawHBROboXzUR92p8JFzWkzu1Rw8ed83ckBG5V15uXZWCNWpByRydQHP4LwysNI05k4Ynm2QzYRJN5T9uh6Y-nLLhHwZ0LLN8fSiIeODwPtkN97bawHlkcx45vtfag/s400/DSCN0234.JPG" width="265" /></a></div>
If you saw an attempt at dynamic modelling in my last post, you will see some very un-dynamic modelling in this post. Lets count how many hands on my hips pictures I've taken.<br />
<br />
I got the box pleat backwards and didn't care enough to fix it. It's doing its job!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8O38iB1V7k1DuRWUmNrudWdT0L0oAGbEWKx1B64RhX8tKUSa2rtctNKICRNiXAeKo_WMI8ho04EH-t42E5ipA715T8dVHxf8qmjNbkyEeG2xpf1KNl42idbuWZ1wdaxx5H85JRVoMw7s/s1600/DSCN0236.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8O38iB1V7k1DuRWUmNrudWdT0L0oAGbEWKx1B64RhX8tKUSa2rtctNKICRNiXAeKo_WMI8ho04EH-t42E5ipA715T8dVHxf8qmjNbkyEeG2xpf1KNl42idbuWZ1wdaxx5H85JRVoMw7s/s400/DSCN0236.JPG" width="265" /></a></div>
I added an extra 10 cm to the bottom of the pattern, to account for both my long torso and also that I wanted it to look more like a tunic.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMi-RRCIoTMvd0M3YIguehMVRnZYVEKeKVYFzgAzbPQKyd0-JIlBqCZSrarmHiqhblGTWBz3QC9zXfrFryuVc-MK_QhCjf10pT4pS64q7K2_QBVuErLXCcgqp7KJ2MgGpCDlqIVXfzVNw/s1600/DSCN0237.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMi-RRCIoTMvd0M3YIguehMVRnZYVEKeKVYFzgAzbPQKyd0-JIlBqCZSrarmHiqhblGTWBz3QC9zXfrFryuVc-MK_QhCjf10pT4pS64q7K2_QBVuErLXCcgqp7KJ2MgGpCDlqIVXfzVNw/s400/DSCN0237.JPG" width="265" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is 3/5 hands-on-hips photos.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Here is a close up of the quilting cotton (featuring a stray thread) I used it for the sleeve placket, inside of the sleeve cuff, the inside of the shirt placket, under collar, and collar stand.<br />

Like my Alder dress, I think this is a versatile piece! Pair it with dress pants or skirt and its office ready, but also looks great with leggings or shorts for casual wear. I'm slowly sewing up the whole Grainline collection! <br />

When I saw <a href="http://grainlinestudio.com/2015/08/31/an-alder-for-all-seasons/" target="_blank">this version, posted by Jen on the Grainline blog</a>, it gave me a kick it the butt to buy the pattern. Those are my colours! I knew immediately it would become a staple in my wardrobe. As much as I am drawn to the outrageous prints in the store (and buy them because I'm impulsive), I tend to only wear black and grey in real life. <br />
<br />
I was really busy and didn't get around to making the dress until fairly recently. Part of this is because of how HUGE the pdf was. I loovvee Grainline's patterns, but their pdfs are often colossal from containing all the views in one file.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I used a black polyester "linen" from the sale rack at Fabricland (evidently my favourite place) It's really light to wear in the heat (tip for wearing all black in the summer). My big gripe with the material is that it was very hard to press. It seemed to melt before it made a crisp fold. Because of this lovely feature, I left out the breast pockets to save myself a headache.<br />

Something is kinda wonky with the sun+my camera in these photos<br />

I'm trying to be a more dynamic model, as viewed in the below picture. Its going medium.<br />

One of my favourite things is looking at all the dresses post gala/award show even though the actual event never interests me. One thing that jumped out at my this year, was all the silver sequins!!<br />

Which reminded me of the skirt I made for new years! Which reminded me, I'm super duper behind on blogging my makes :/ I have me-mades dating from August that I need to blog, OOPS. Part of that is because I've been really busy with school, partly because I have tried to focus more on the <i>purpose </i>aspect of my sewing, and being more thoughtful about what I spend my sewing time on.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQnV_FMPVL0ohBDUJMSuljBSIutoT3TT0H2zHTDhcvQYlZq-65qw-uzJp-Os8LaRVbYRK47OFQxdc-XH2yj84vXEjPKQSd5yASpDoL7P8FdITaJjqPvPLNB_K-B60j2Lt8wWVplNjQxr4/s1600/DSCN0240-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQnV_FMPVL0ohBDUJMSuljBSIutoT3TT0H2zHTDhcvQYlZq-65qw-uzJp-Os8LaRVbYRK47OFQxdc-XH2yj84vXEjPKQSd5yASpDoL7P8FdITaJjqPvPLNB_K-B60j2Lt8wWVplNjQxr4/s400/DSCN0240-001.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
So I pulled out my best Kardashian pout and took some snaps of my new years outfit, in May. With a grey t-shirt. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizgd-KwOmuZkjjimnw1cF82ogY5tgvgxjAfpbF6Fa6b5v0_KTbGEG3yki8292XXryu6yk_SrQ-gSFZ4slKLPn4NwR1TLnteIjNCgZkgJgrGDMpD-LkEHI-lY4NjrGuPI4TR9dsI4FSS38/s1600/DSCN0241.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizgd-KwOmuZkjjimnw1cF82ogY5tgvgxjAfpbF6Fa6b5v0_KTbGEG3yki8292XXryu6yk_SrQ-gSFZ4slKLPn4NwR1TLnteIjNCgZkgJgrGDMpD-LkEHI-lY4NjrGuPI4TR9dsI4FSS38/s400/DSCN0241.JPG" width="265" /></a></div>
Don't got those Kardashian hips though :) Can you imagine the fit alterations those ladies would need?!<br />
<br />
I used Lekala 5088, three seamed skirt, this time knowing the nuances of the pattern. Although you put your measurements right into Lekala for a personalized pattern, I found it fit large the last time I made it. I found it fit best taking in 5/8 in from the side of the pattern without adding any seam allowances.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggSN0GquIUeKWDEqnXU2YYFOwNfPCFwve6L-7bzgg4I1oSAQn4PSXJRVYQXM2ZAW_Zk4e1GnpokAH0CZDXQSvaUiNUpr4SGOFvaH7X-jNf5tGwz4BYkI7-HDaqDrs-uRO8Dubm8J3uvJg/s1600/DSCN0243.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggSN0GquIUeKWDEqnXU2YYFOwNfPCFwve6L-7bzgg4I1oSAQn4PSXJRVYQXM2ZAW_Zk4e1GnpokAH0CZDXQSvaUiNUpr4SGOFvaH7X-jNf5tGwz4BYkI7-HDaqDrs-uRO8Dubm8J3uvJg/s400/DSCN0243.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
I opted for no waistband because I thought it would break up the sequins too much, so I added twill tape to the seam between the lining and sequins to minimize stretching.<br />
<br />
The lining was a thicker suiting from the sale section at fabric land. Pretty close colour match! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijzisFKnKND8qmKfRr1G6smTXPjcLZd0pqRMG31E1TofdyQlAeFRwRccpN1i6lAnQQxIGN2ONAIiApfO5p5GM6Ji3qrsA1SZHyuwsvF1Emg_-2cJ0WQDiuPXxg-lALBfVIKO9u-4ivZ3Q/s1600/DSCN0253.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijzisFKnKND8qmKfRr1G6smTXPjcLZd0pqRMG31E1TofdyQlAeFRwRccpN1i6lAnQQxIGN2ONAIiApfO5p5GM6Ji3qrsA1SZHyuwsvF1Emg_-2cJ0WQDiuPXxg-lALBfVIKO9u-4ivZ3Q/s400/DSCN0253.JPG" width="400" /> </a></div>
<br />
The fabric has a really neat edge, so I wanted to incorporate it into the final skirt on the bottom edge. I actually had been sitting on this fabric for a while! I bought it when I lived in England and brought it all the way back to Canada before I came up with the perfect use for it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdWmcIZ4iJYrUzMCjWRbiqu86KUZ6NXD2FuLiDacTap1T5nVWXCS2m6DEmkHxGHDJfCcar7sJJ2cy7qzbEO_zx9sTLracLJeUk_qTGEEV-KZU0qFdXBdHMR3csFwAmn7QEwKgPWNDKaKk/s1600/DSCN0255.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdWmcIZ4iJYrUzMCjWRbiqu86KUZ6NXD2FuLiDacTap1T5nVWXCS2m6DEmkHxGHDJfCcar7sJJ2cy7qzbEO_zx9sTLracLJeUk_qTGEEV-KZU0qFdXBdHMR3csFwAmn7QEwKgPWNDKaKk/s400/DSCN0255.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
In retrospect, I should have chosen a pattern with as few darts as possible. This pattern has SIX and I could have easily done with TWO for a decent fit. I wasn't thinking about how much of a pain it is to sew with sequin fabric! The sequins are several layers thick, difficult to cut off, difficult to sew through.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Sensible Sun-wear</h3>
When my two daughters Alex and Emma were young we lived for a short while in Australia and spent countless hours on the beach, where most children are fully clad in front zip sun suits to protect them from the relentless sunshine.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJuYJi2are6rocvCgki08pFxoQPmQ9AH466ibL6rHzzlHAvLRMrhpdQ4SysKjOljwLniEEpAn6_LBYRbEeOk_1RipGVhFN9jKuoRhYaRxfZNf7dwFJKKnFHyeS-DW8t0vFkp88dmduhdE/s1600/aussie_swim_wear.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="264" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJuYJi2are6rocvCgki08pFxoQPmQ9AH466ibL6rHzzlHAvLRMrhpdQ4SysKjOljwLniEEpAn6_LBYRbEeOk_1RipGVhFN9jKuoRhYaRxfZNf7dwFJKKnFHyeS-DW8t0vFkp88dmduhdE/s320/aussie_swim_wear.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
In contrast to Canada where, when the sun does shine, and the weather is warm enough to sport swimwear, we all stripe down and expose as much skin to the sun as possible, with the exception of those who do not possess tan worthy completions. Myself and my youngest daughter Emma were gifted with skin that goes from white to red within minutes of sun exposure, for that reason the Australian sun attire was not abandon when we came back to Canada. The economics of supply and demand in the Canadian swimwear market does not lend itself to full coverage sun attire. The availability of full sun protection beach wear, known on the market as rash-guards, is limited to items plastered with brand names and more appropriate for an 18 year old surfer dude. Nothing really available for the middle aged women with lily white skin, therefore the need to sew ones own sun protection.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Inspiration:</h3>
When digging for ideas, Alexandra directed me to an American swimwear company <a href="http://www.theseea.com/collections/rashguards" target="_blank">Seea</a> that has a few modest designs and some fun colour combinations.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Exhibit 1:</h3>
For my first attempt I used the <a href="http://closetcasefiles.com/introducing-nettie-pattern/" target="_blank">Nettie Top pattern from Closet Case</a> pattern and added a strip under the arm and down the side. I also sectioned the top into 2 pieces to add interest. I have previously used the pattern to make several tops but found it a bit tight around the arm holes, hence the addition of the strip under the arm and down the side, which also added a design element. The bottoms are a separate piece and I used the <a href="http://shop.clothhabit.com/products/watson-bra-bikini" target="_blank">Watson Bar and Bikini Pattern</a> from Clothes Habit and modified the bottoms into a more modest boy style short.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJLKLgHlV1buanb15hKYyytZyRzPtO9L-vwwBDmy_q6oYSoTjOqM7cy_h_HQRHkWvHYbkaOmRNjrK0-U3jSRqUslSG6XnZM7YGqwxujw23gK3nLB2HyH-MNTlTMpozDnXoUfFt_Sx53hg/s1600/P1000791.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJLKLgHlV1buanb15hKYyytZyRzPtO9L-vwwBDmy_q6oYSoTjOqM7cy_h_HQRHkWvHYbkaOmRNjrK0-U3jSRqUslSG6XnZM7YGqwxujw23gK3nLB2HyH-MNTlTMpozDnXoUfFt_Sx53hg/s320/P1000791.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I was very pleased with the outcome.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Exhibit 2: </h3>
My second attempt was a bit more colourful, I used the <a href="http://greenstylecreations.com/products/centerfield-raglan-t-shirt" target="_blank">GreenStyle Centerfield Raglan T-Shirt</a> Pattern which was a dream to work with and a perfect fit! I sliced up the left arm with a few colours to add interest and I had no choice because I ran out of fabric.<br />

I didn't actually expect I'd get a lot of wear out of them (I figured I just needed to get the overall craze out of my system) so I headed
to the bargain rack and picked up some grey-scale leopard denim (3
dollas a meter y'all) except I actually wear these all the time. I get
so many compliments on them! And they are so comfy. I slimmed down the
legs a bit and that's the only thing I changed. Next time I will
lengthen the straps a bit, I have a long torso. </div>

Chic overalls, who would have thought. So the pattern calls for 3 yards, but since this is Canada and we use reasonable units of measurement here AKA the metric system I bought 3 meters. I'm also pretty sure my real life super power is really efficient placement of pattern pieces because I only used 1 3/4 m of fabric for this. The only obvious choice here was...<br />

MATCHING BEST FRIEND OVERALLS! I was about 30cm short of being able to make another full length pair, but I think one of each was a good call. Not totally matching but still complementary. I wish I had better photos of us in the matching overalls but it had totally slipped my mind, and my phone camera leaves a lot to be desired. Next time!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16135631861070892377noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2039795687750535804.post-4683553492938612802015-10-10T15:54:00.001-07:002015-10-10T15:54:51.232-07:00Morris Blazer 2.0I recently finished a second <a href="http://shop.grainlinestudio.com/collections/morris" target="_blank">Morris blazer</a>! (My first one is blogged<a href="http://sewingwithpurpose.blogspot.ca/2015/05/grainline-morris-blazer.html" target="_blank"> here</a>) My summer sewing fell by the wayside as I mentioned in an earlier post, so I planned a sewing-saturday with a friend so we could finish up some things on our list! It was just the motivation I needed to get my sewing mojo back (now I have 4 garments that I need to sew buttons on, i h8 sewing button holes)<br />

I fell in love with the idea of <a href="http://whatkatiesews.net/boyfriend-morris/" target="_blank">a "boyfriend" Morris from What Katie Sews</a> and needed to try the same thing. I ended up adding 2.5 inches to the bottom of my pattern (I don't know how tall Katie is but she looks shorter than me at 5'8", she added 2 inches). Other than that I graded from a 6 at the shoulders to 8 at the hips.<br />

I ordered the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/transaction/1063064955" target="_blank">fabric online</a>, I think I would have preferred something a bit thicker but I am pleased with the slightly unstructured look of the blazer. I opted to leave the cuffs unlined so I could have the textured insides showing when my sleeves are rolled up.<br />

I am wearing it with my favourite Watson bra today! <br />

Alexandra and I made both made the bombshell bathing suit last summer but finally got around to posting the pictures. It was an easy and not so easy project to complete. As I was making it I kept thinking it was going to be way too small, the ruching is deceiving. It did fit a bit snug but was happy with the overall results.<br />

As my mom mentioned, we both made the bombshell! She has outdone me with her modelling by a long shot, but I have some photos of mine. I chose to make the halter version, I am more pear shaped than my mom with a flatter bust and I was concerned that the ruching on the sweetheart neckline would make me look as flat as a board. The halter top gave me some serious grief! Its the first time I had worked with swimwear lycra in this context and there was a steep learning curve, plus I didn't have a serger! <br />

I keep sewing things, then getting excited and wearing them right away and totally forgetting to take photos. One such piece is the Grainline Maritime Shorts. I conned a friend into taking some photos this weekend at a girls cottage weekend (she understands my plight, I took her photo for the international anna party, its the <a href="https://instagram.com/p/5SlxbymVL8/?taken-by=alexandrabenko" target="_blank">popsicle dress on my instagram</a>!)<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
I got back from working abroad last August and found I had an, uh... width-wise growth spurt and had no shorts for this summer. I got to work on this pattern with a discount denim from Fabricland (it's my first pair and I wanted to play it safe) The fabric is quite neat! One way the threads are pink and the other they are blue, it gives it a cool sheen. You can see it on the selvedge here:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRGVzLZQL_vjY0oAYE8QhUgx-FSQzQkHU0GQxilcx84W9KV3ukyBBPxj7ZxtucMaDtKEvmIVOmLY2boLxC1IXUadriE8NcIgAuXbGBysM3qCNfywOL9sOfCyxLHDP0KUc8crrfA5jGxfE/s1600/DSC07841.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRGVzLZQL_vjY0oAYE8QhUgx-FSQzQkHU0GQxilcx84W9KV3ukyBBPxj7ZxtucMaDtKEvmIVOmLY2boLxC1IXUadriE8NcIgAuXbGBysM3qCNfywOL9sOfCyxLHDP0KUc8crrfA5jGxfE/s320/DSC07841.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
My original plan for the shorts was to finish them with a scallop. I couldn't get the edge super neat, and after the first wear I realized some of the scallops fold up when I sit on them and it looks pretty silly. Here they were before:<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXbtcsEGfHW8E-5OqTriSN2MFKWCFlp2inQ4bnx8zxtS9p3kUlcbYCwaQAs4eWrfgERE83NHpdnSAgywG4X3oUfSomcHqVPDzChFQ4xTtprJzNAjMTYKjPbiMRWByfbzNjTWNDzTiAg-A/s1600/DSC07844.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXbtcsEGfHW8E-5OqTriSN2MFKWCFlp2inQ4bnx8zxtS9p3kUlcbYCwaQAs4eWrfgERE83NHpdnSAgywG4X3oUfSomcHqVPDzChFQ4xTtprJzNAjMTYKjPbiMRWByfbzNjTWNDzTiAg-A/s320/DSC07844.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I cut off the scallop and put on a cuff! I like the way it looks<br />

For my next go at the pattern I would like to make the leg hole a bit smaller. I still need to play around with it and figure out how to do it. I think I can get away with sizing down the whole pattern actually, most denims grow a bit with wear (this fantastic purple denim included).</div>

Here I am pictured below with a neat geological feature! The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Shield" target="_blank">Canadian Shield</a> used to be the site of an ancient sea, and these cool pot holes were worn away in the rock where pebbles got stuck in eddies (my boyfriend is a geological engineer which is where I got this info). This one was much deeper than my feet reached, and there was gunk in the bottom to boot so I'm not even sure how deep it actually is!<br />

I'll keep you posted on whether or not I've caught some weird foot fungus from sticking my feet in there. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16135631861070892377noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2039795687750535804.post-16275234588496500002015-07-11T08:50:00.001-07:002015-07-20T19:22:40.726-07:00Pin Pegs Mini Skirt<br />
The idea for this skirt came about when I realized I have an astonishing lack of me-made basics and neutrals. It seems like every time I set out to make something, I go out looking to get grey/blue/solid coloured fabric and come back with the most ridiculously patterned thing I could find in the store. This made putting together outfits for Me-Made-May really difficult! So when I saw this denim remnant for a reduced price I snapped it up!<br />
<br />
It has a 60% stretch which is impressive for denim, but there was only 60cm left in the store. For that reason I had planned to make a simple pencil skirt, basically stretching the material around my body. BUT then, Annie from <a href="http://sewthispattern.com/" target="_blank">Sew This Pattern</a>/<a href="http://sewninestitches.blogspot.ca/" target="_blank">Nine Stitches</a> put the<a href="http://sewthispattern.com/product/pin-pegs-mini-skirt/" target="_blank"> Pin Pegs</a> skirt on saallleee and as I already alluded, I have a really hard time passing up sales.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkLtdsU6UNzcck2nMB3WtGi8Gt3bDVI0wBDuc14IFP6WgF0lkhpgqknKgJjhJsHT6W0e_LDr9a2kMyveqq5dmd60_nqfE1NhC-VIKIw2VwtsQaFpvAPPEufIJpnUbm2GyguKAdti1ikL8/s1600/IMG_0067.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkLtdsU6UNzcck2nMB3WtGi8Gt3bDVI0wBDuc14IFP6WgF0lkhpgqknKgJjhJsHT6W0e_LDr9a2kMyveqq5dmd60_nqfE1NhC-VIKIw2VwtsQaFpvAPPEufIJpnUbm2GyguKAdti1ikL8/s640/IMG_0067.JPG" width="424" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pattern calls for 115 cm and I had 60 cm (it was 45 inches wide to boot). This presented a bit of a problem. I ended up not including the facings, and I only had fabric to cut 1 of each waistband piece. The other side is made from scraps of black denim I had around. I also didn't include the underflap. I had it cut out from the aforementioned black denim but I think it would have been too visible.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I cut a straight size 10 for this pattern. I should have really graded between 10 at the waist and 12 at the hips, I <i>should</i> do that for most patterns but I usually just cut a straight size that's a bit smaller than my hip measurement and it works out. If this fabric wasn't so stretchy I would NOT fit into it, I definitely recommend grading it properly and next time I will! There are some bunching lines around the hips which are tell-tale signs that its a bit too small.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpLwSYlvN7nBom0xdBtPIjlA1lNq8M3ZbxrfcNjIfSvXTjYAKZ1PXQrar30wTMn4t8Q87u0SAkEnwNTIi3IUSDPDP3BOlhZrpvHiG7cy19TMDGwSXGujefrXk9nXR9l3fboac18B-9P4k/s1600/IMG_0073.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpLwSYlvN7nBom0xdBtPIjlA1lNq8M3ZbxrfcNjIfSvXTjYAKZ1PXQrar30wTMn4t8Q87u0SAkEnwNTIi3IUSDPDP3BOlhZrpvHiG7cy19TMDGwSXGujefrXk9nXR9l3fboac18B-9P4k/s640/IMG_0073.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That won't stop me from wearing it! I really love this skirt! I hope to wear it with the surplus of <a href="http://workroomsocial.com/blog/tate-top/" target="_blank">Tate</a> <a href="http://sewingwithpurpose.blogspot.ca/2015/04/my-closet.html" target="_blank">Crop</a> <a href="http://sewingwithpurpose.blogspot.ca/2015/03/pencil-skirt-sewing-party.html" target="_blank">Tops</a> I made out of really bright cottons.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another issue I ran into with this skirt is that I could not find a 35 cm zipper! I ended up using a 40cm zipper and adding a couple inches to the length. I'm 5'8 so I could stand to have a little bit more length!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I decided to be brave and show the innards of my skirt, since I did deviate from the instructions quite a bit. I finished the bottom edge by folding up 1 inch of fabric (this was accommodated for in the cutting process) and I used a black bias tape to finish the front flaps after the zipper ends. This picture was taken with a potato and I couldn't get the skirt to lay flat for the life of me.<br />

All in all I'm quite pleased and impressed with this pattern. The asymmetrical aspect of it is very trendy and cute, and I will definitely sew it again!</div>

He has this grey jersey hoodie that is great in cool summer evenings, but basically as soon as he got it he ripped a hole in it! Which doesn't stop him from wearing it because he is basically a fashion hobo. But I wanted to make him a replacement. The <a href="http://threadtheory.ca/products/finlayson-sweater" target="_blank">Finlayson Sweater</a> from<a href="http://threadtheory.ca/" target="_blank"> Thread Theory</a> has a very similar hood and I used that as my base.<br />

I only put one layer of fabric for the hood because the fabric is a knit without a lot of stretch and I think it would drape funny with more bulk. I finished the seams around the hood edge and interior neckline with handmade bias tape that I made out of an amy butler print I had leftover from another project. Here is a close up: <br />

My boyfriend is a much more dyanmic model than I am, so here is the garment from every possible angle. I think the one above is actually a bodybuilding pose.<br />

I was really impressed with Thread Theory, its a canadian company and their patterns are named after places on the west coast. The instructions were really coherent and the pictures that went along with them were really helpful. The pattern itself was well drafted and the pdf printout came together quickly.<br />

I'd been thinking about sewing up this outfit for a while but this was the perfect kick in the butt to get started.<br />
<br />
I used the <a href="http://www.store.closetcasefiles.com/products/nettie-pattern" target="_blank">Nettie body suit pattern from Closet Case Files</a>, and the <a href="http://www.sewaholicpatterns.com/gabriola-skirt/" target="_blank">Gabriola Skirt from Sewaholic</a>. I used a rayon for the skirt, and left over supplex for the top. I had originally purchased different fabric for this skirt, but I saw it on sale in the depths of winter and the tropical print called to me, reminding me of warmer days! I couldn't pass it up, luckily now its warm enough to actually wear<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhokOhPccXWewW9NgeP66aDUCvITMf_71Gb9HazG0WkjZe6AVGp6LQQyMHgbeKL76iljSntoC7mP1mIdZuyYtubKamD2LuQ1r4z6yKxwDnNgbKCS4MbdCAj4cvXYShBxEl2pQgIwyDZKBw/s1600/Screenshot+2015-06-12+12.20.43.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhokOhPccXWewW9NgeP66aDUCvITMf_71Gb9HazG0WkjZe6AVGp6LQQyMHgbeKL76iljSntoC7mP1mIdZuyYtubKamD2LuQ1r4z6yKxwDnNgbKCS4MbdCAj4cvXYShBxEl2pQgIwyDZKBw/s640/Screenshot+2015-06-12+12.20.43.png" width="419" /></a></div>
The shape of the Gabriola Skirt is so flattering, I'm looking forward to making many more! I am pear shaped and
didn't need to adjust the pattern at all, which was awesome. The only
adjustment I ended up making was an accident, I misinterpreted the
waistband instructions! I used a hook for a closure instead of the button suggested.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi__an6VTnMTZpNB5buZ2Iq3UL1H6U1F5aASzgFp4QKD2eNh5Z2LR44w9iz3ZGPgM6O5K3wxi6HR-oi93fW5eh1b0UwBQ-4Kd6h4-GN0ZKApWiZwrGtS9Cpyq_qyn9RL0rw6D_ib94FOxM/s1600/Screenshot+2015-06-12+12.21.21.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi__an6VTnMTZpNB5buZ2Iq3UL1H6U1F5aASzgFp4QKD2eNh5Z2LR44w9iz3ZGPgM6O5K3wxi6HR-oi93fW5eh1b0UwBQ-4Kd6h4-GN0ZKApWiZwrGtS9Cpyq_qyn9RL0rw6D_ib94FOxM/s640/Screenshot+2015-06-12+12.21.21.png" width="422" /></a></div>
The Nettie bodysuit is something I have made a few times by now, but this is my first body suit. It's a classic wardrobe staple that will get a lot of wear. The high neck/medium back is my go-to mostly because you can still wear a bra with it :) The high neck is great to show off statement necklaces, and the low back is very elegant. My shoulders are large (not broad, if this makes sense) so I'd usually make and sleeve and armhole a bit bigger but I opted not to for this version because of how stretchy the supplex is. Turns out I should have done that here too! There are some fabric wrinkles underneath the arms that show its too small in the arms<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The amount of fabric volume in the skirt is fantastic, it flutters so nicely when I walk, and doesn't restrict my steps.<br />
<br />

Lining up the diagonal bands that sit on the hips was a bit of a challenge for me, I had chosen the rayon over the shiny satin-like fabric I had originally chosen for this pattern because I assumed this fabric would be more forgivable. However, every time I tried to unpick a seam the woven fabric unraveled too! If I could go back in time I would choose a jersey, which is still hard to seam-rip but the seam allowance would still be salvageable afterwards!<br />

I set about to change that this week, starting with the <a href="http://boutique.deer-and-doe.fr/29-tops-plantain-t-shirt.html" target="_blank">Plantain Tee</a> from Deer and Doe. I've had this pattern for a while and never really got around to making it, but I really enjoyed seeing all the shirts that came out of the <a href="http://blog-en.deer-and-doe.fr/79-take-part-in-the-plantain-challenge/" target="_blank">Plantain Challenge</a>. <br />

I picked up a jersey reminant, I'm not sure what exactly the composition is but its soooo soft and I never want to take it off. I got my boyfriend to take photos while we were out today, and all of them are unusable! He is a BAD photographer. I cropped out the camera strap in this awkward action shot because otherwise there would be no photos.<br />

I was really excited when I saw <a href="http://shop.grainlinestudio.com/collections/morris/products/morris-blazer-pdf" target="_blank">this pattern</a> release a couple weeks ago, I was just finishing up an exam and paper for my last class EVER and bought it as a treat for finishing everything. Reading other blog's it looks like its been a pattern a long time coming! I'm glad I'm around for the release!<br />
<br />
Also I want to point out a small change to the blog, I'm using the google+ commenting system now, so if I respond to someone's comment they actually get a notification. That is a huge flaw with blogger and it drives me nuts <br />
<br />
I used a ponte/double knit my mom had leftover from another project in chocolate brown. I would never pick out something brown, fabric or RTW, but now I'm really glad I have it. It goes with black AND navy, while not being gray (I have so many gray clothes)<br />

I had quite a bit of trouble easing in the sleeves, I suspect it is because the fabric I used is too thick for the pattern. You can see above that the seam is kinda wavy, I had to squish the fabric in so it fit. Looking around at other makes, it looks like other people had this problem too. In particular, <a href="http://gingermakes.com/2015/04/28/grainline-morris-blazer-x2/" target="_blank">Ginger made one out of a scuba knit</a>, which I think this could be labelled as. If you take a look through her photos you can see a bit of a wavy seam at the back too, albeit not as bad as mine.<br />

I took a photo of the sleeve on my dress form, I top stitched everything because this stuff did not iron well. On my body, the waves fill out a bit. I don't really think it's too noticeable when I'm wearing it.<br />
<br />
The blazer in action! Eating crepes, mmm This is also a me-made-may outfit. They are not featured, but I also made the tights out of <a href="http://www.shelby.fi/kaava/302/302.php" target="_blank">this pattern </a>which I love dearly. <br />

Here is a straight on photo from my dress form:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicMjTP_iBbFCJfnJLvF_0UZkfiT3s0SaXb7t2Y-4pn8FsBpfGA40fWFUisT3pIBE7Au-L34XYL_paWjA4qorQ1R04Vdo6qE69FZArf5KwSaUahupgBCgZJyQVYl0nI92K74U2HuxiV3Bg/s1600/Screenshot+2015-05-08+08.18.17.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicMjTP_iBbFCJfnJLvF_0UZkfiT3s0SaXb7t2Y-4pn8FsBpfGA40fWFUisT3pIBE7Au-L34XYL_paWjA4qorQ1R04Vdo6qE69FZArf5KwSaUahupgBCgZJyQVYl0nI92K74U2HuxiV3Bg/s640/Screenshot+2015-05-08+08.18.17.png" width="500" /></a></div>
For next time (because I definitely want to make this again) I'm going to use a thinner fabric, and thinner interfacing. The interfacing/fabric combo is so thick that you can see my folded over seams though the front of the jacket!<br />

I had originally planned to wear one me made piece a day and hoped to get a lot of wear out of my fun cotton dresses, but it looks like I'll be in the lab doing messy stuff and I don't want to ruin any of my clothes! I'll just do the best I can. I'm sure I can get by just wearing my Watson bras for a month :)<br />
<br />
Now for the main attraction! I'm not one to have a "stash" of fabric (I like having a project in mind before I buy), but I have had a couple pieces that I loved too much to pass up or were gifted to me that I've been waiting to find the PERFECT pattern for. One of these was a butterfly print cotton my mom brought to me in England, and it made it all the way back to Canada because I couldn't find a pattern to do it justice. WELL THE WAIT IS OVER!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<a href="http://www.lekala.co/catalog/dresses/4282#model" target="_blank">Lekala #4282</a> finally won as the pattern of choice. The print is pretty feminine and it was obvious to me it was screaming to be made into a dress, but I thought the pink butterflies could quickly cross over too far into the "cutesy" territory than I was comfortable with. I think this pattern is the perfect match! I love the pleating detail in the bust:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCAs0UaHRreYo7-ZNijuhAxeh0AlGs6e5S_HVaCHW-sgx6I3Ol-mcLu2nQs_KJz0AkMqqO6TD3HiGrr-1EXOMqtqIQk0Ydq04HtOYDi45YTVvR0OQ7rJCShs6Cwt0cFePSXBhIHm-mhPM/s1600/Screenshot+2015-05-03+17.15.18.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCAs0UaHRreYo7-ZNijuhAxeh0AlGs6e5S_HVaCHW-sgx6I3Ol-mcLu2nQs_KJz0AkMqqO6TD3HiGrr-1EXOMqtqIQk0Ydq04HtOYDi45YTVvR0OQ7rJCShs6Cwt0cFePSXBhIHm-mhPM/s1600/Screenshot+2015-05-03+17.15.18.png" height="400" width="297" /></a></div>
I actually made a muslin for this for the first time ever! Everything I read up on about Lekala patterns mentions that they fit small, but I actually found this a bit too roomy for my tastes. Even after I made the adjustments from the muslin it's a bit loose, but only by a small margin<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table>
The pattern calls for a double box pleat, which I did for the muslin, but didn't have quite enough for the finished dress, instead I just put regular box pleats and it looks just fine.<br />

I have been wearing this dress so much! It's so comfortable and easy to throw on and look put together, its quickly becoming my go-to dress.<br />
<br />
In other news, I went on a 15k hike today and it was snake central! I saw 6 snakes, I guess they are all out sunning themselves before the leaves on the trees grow in. I saw this snake and it is HUGE. I was really happy believing snakes didn't get this big here in Ontario but now I can't ignore it.<br />

<br />
I have made 8 so far, 5 for myself and 3 for friends. I prooobbably don't need anymore for the time being, and I'm thinking of switching to the underwear pattern and making 5 pairs so I can have pretty sets.<br />
<br />
I've decided to do<a href="http://sozowhatdoyouknow.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/me-made-may15-sign-up-here.html" target="_blank"> Me-Made-May</a> this year and I'm thinking this new abundance of Watson's make it a hell of a lot easier! What I like to sew doesn't really align with what I buy RTW and wear on a daily basis (hilarious novelty print dresses don't look cute with steel-toe boots) so I think good chunk of the me-made pieces are going to be undergarments and athletic gear.<br />
<br />
The three top pairs in the photo are my 3 new ones. The snakeskin one is the true to the pattern, but I've made slight variations to the other two. The white floral one is my favourite. I am absolutely in love with the fabric!<br />

I made a silly mistake when ordering the straps. I totally didn't look at the width and was pretty surprised when 3/16th inch thick straps showed up instead of 1/2 inch. BUT I made do, and decided to double up the strap. This was kinda hard to maneuver, and presented a bit of a problem at the back:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv5i0nz2FzNrfnxkwLn7DD3hmOUHEKlq4EydqRO7g9t9u0Q-BBnGcw8wEJ9p6uXJxPqAY7-m2AHQwGTkEPzkqfOBQv3lPKVP-7KY0XdGgmzG1PNTKVIwr6Z67-APnYGLvBcvBBU6s6DL4/s1600/Screenshot+2015-04-19+17.00.38.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv5i0nz2FzNrfnxkwLn7DD3hmOUHEKlq4EydqRO7g9t9u0Q-BBnGcw8wEJ9p6uXJxPqAY7-m2AHQwGTkEPzkqfOBQv3lPKVP-7KY0XdGgmzG1PNTKVIwr6Z67-APnYGLvBcvBBU6s6DL4/s1600/Screenshot+2015-04-19+17.00.38.png" height="301" width="400" /></a></div>
I had to invent a way to attach both straps close together. I think I did alright, the only thing is that it kinda twists when you wear it. It's under my clothes so I'm not too broken up about it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOOvgYVA_1jB6xW7lQa7bLDprpzb7BnPyDH3XK915rBIbygm0ajMdNp-9Yxntk0zcM_yqSwGi8BqsGTyxLCqIYitqYuLfzMkxFC3-pp9D56GX687Bulocu1gtu4PICCR5IWJiXNV87h3I/s1600/Screenshot+2015-04-19+17.01.09.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOOvgYVA_1jB6xW7lQa7bLDprpzb7BnPyDH3XK915rBIbygm0ajMdNp-9Yxntk0zcM_yqSwGi8BqsGTyxLCqIYitqYuLfzMkxFC3-pp9D56GX687Bulocu1gtu4PICCR5IWJiXNV87h3I/s1600/Screenshot+2015-04-19+17.01.09.png" height="400" width="297" /></a></div>
My second variation, is that I tried to foam line a Watson to make a bikini top! I used <a href="http://clothhabit.com/make-a-foam-cup-bra/" target="_blank">a tutorial from Cloth Habit</a> for the foam lining. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdN44hyMDX4ZCD1HERph1_x5NJPQLhsHc485PUAEOVljt2cMRH-qpKgen23IIZE-s3GQiK8U9redpOyjz_SiRSlIba8LxsWOVWemtbLEEQx2N4dYcxcpJosIZ0wc254VvjTinS3-0FGOY/s1600/DSC07387.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdN44hyMDX4ZCD1HERph1_x5NJPQLhsHc485PUAEOVljt2cMRH-qpKgen23IIZE-s3GQiK8U9redpOyjz_SiRSlIba8LxsWOVWemtbLEEQx2N4dYcxcpJosIZ0wc254VvjTinS3-0FGOY/s1600/DSC07387.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
I did run into some problems with this. I found the cups didn't really fit in the cradle and I had some excess at the sides. I have laid this one on top of another to show how much I cut off.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2mcbN-tJnPdxsDznBVgaPoD_TF8sJn1o0CIKFccFncpteR7E5VclXrHcufQSK9SE-WvT5pUZuxMuX8axx7Eue_2uAwxXWLFiIChxiTOfBX7CzaYCw1E2G9frGWmVpsl5k1sgabJqkk_Q/s1600/DSC07389.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2mcbN-tJnPdxsDznBVgaPoD_TF8sJn1o0CIKFccFncpteR7E5VclXrHcufQSK9SE-WvT5pUZuxMuX8axx7Eue_2uAwxXWLFiIChxiTOfBX7CzaYCw1E2G9frGWmVpsl5k1sgabJqkk_Q/s1600/DSC07389.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
This doesn't make it unwearable, but there is definitely more side-boob going on. I asked on the facebook bra-making forum about this and was directed to The <a href="http://clothingengineer.com/2015/02/foam-cup-cloth-habit-watson/" target="_blank">Clothing Engineer's post on foam lining the Watson</a> (I just lover her blog name so much). It looks like she went up in size to account for the non stretch so maybe that is my problem. I will try again!<br />
<br />
Here are the innards of the bikini top. Not neat! I kinda used whatever I had laying around for the lining, I didn't have any swimwear lining on hand and couldn't see any at Fabricland. This lace seems like the sort of fabric to dry quickly... (the back is lined with powermesh)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDZEbsO-laUVsSjddDuUR8autVreyqigwjwVcxnPbAwsM_ytqejHX2-0HxF2TQDSyiZ-9jJXDSuDhRhkFOWrCeu8ze4o6z7h_sdA532nXq5zmUjwkMgVR58YWL5vVT7s_MP3y-i57o25I/s1600/DSC07386.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDZEbsO-laUVsSjddDuUR8autVreyqigwjwVcxnPbAwsM_ytqejHX2-0HxF2TQDSyiZ-9jJXDSuDhRhkFOWrCeu8ze4o6z7h_sdA532nXq5zmUjwkMgVR58YWL5vVT7s_MP3y-i57o25I/s1600/DSC07386.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
It seems like most people use some sort of binding to neaten up the bottom edge of the foam, I looked on the bra-making forum (again) and there was a helpful conversation of someone asking the same sort of thing. It seems fold-over elastic is the most recommended, but there is also the "taco method" (??) and adding extra seam allowance to the spandex cover and bagging out the bottom, so the edge is neat, and will cover the seam allowance from the cradle when topstiched down.<br />
<br />
I kinda DIYed my own way of doing it, I used a scrap of black swimwear fabric to encase the seam, then its stitched down with the top stitching. Upon further research, it's basically the hong-kong binding method. I feel like this also keeps the cups under my boobs where they belong, but this may be something I'm imagining and it was fine all along. Less itchy, that's for sure!<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh62_hyN99mLlOqPCGYZ3mDjOsgZcyzgQXB-iXjcXAv6WpS4P1Osr5kElCSzrYuyVD22GcCJ5HeOIuk-BW7_83aFivoui_QTAtZo9CeWikkPgKq3JU0y48-BgWdb1iU7xExJrPrU_5UAvs/s1600/DSC07452.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh62_hyN99mLlOqPCGYZ3mDjOsgZcyzgQXB-iXjcXAv6WpS4P1Osr5kElCSzrYuyVD22GcCJ5HeOIuk-BW7_83aFivoui_QTAtZo9CeWikkPgKq3JU0y48-BgWdb1iU7xExJrPrU_5UAvs/s1600/DSC07452.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a> <br />
<br />
I will definitely still wear this in spite of the hiccups I ran into. Many of the mistakes are on the inside so as long as I manage to keep my top on in public I don't think anyone will notice! The cover is also a bit baggy, but it's alright for a start I think. Upwards and onwards from here!<br />

The <a href="http://shop.grainlinestudio.com/collections/pdf-downloads/products/morris-blazer-pdf" target="_blank">Morris blazer</a> got released today from <a href="http://grainlinestudio.com/" target="_blank">Grainline Studio</a>, and I really like it! I even have a ponte lurking around that I've been hesitant to use because I want to use it for the perfect thing, this could be it! I am done with my coursework on the 27th, so me and this blazer have a date on Monday evening!<br />

So I have a long standing love affair with quilting cotton, I know some people frown upon sewing garments out of quilting cotton, but the patterns are just so much <i>better</i>. I can hardly stand to walk into a store that has quilting cottons and walk away empty handed, I feel like I need to own those bright colourful patterns! I have found the perfect pattern that for my obsession: <a href="http://workroomsocial.com/blog/tate-top/" target="_blank">The Tate Top</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbcmyumb39GbLRXRzYVBMmCgMJKEwskzXizC0CRLMAW-6lja_lOmANosn6UgOAzh8DtvS6Z8wXLAO1fzJCKdrbglBy8Fe-YwizDJ57uVl6UNFNvEs0a747lw00pTpotH_44hQEEq2ZnG8/s1600/Screenshot+2015-04-19+17.01.34.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbcmyumb39GbLRXRzYVBMmCgMJKEwskzXizC0CRLMAW-6lja_lOmANosn6UgOAzh8DtvS6Z8wXLAO1fzJCKdrbglBy8Fe-YwizDJ57uVl6UNFNvEs0a747lw00pTpotH_44hQEEq2ZnG8/s1600/Screenshot+2015-04-19+17.01.34.png" height="400" width="295" /></a></div>
<br />
I know I made this pattern in my last post, but I didn't realize its full potential for quilting cotton hoarding until this project. I can squeeze out a Tate Top in my size in a half meter of fabric!!!! (if one of the panels is upside down) This justifies soooo many future quilting cotton purchases for me I can hardly wait. I don't need to buy like 3m for a dress, I can spend just ~$7 to satisfy my needs!<br />
<br />
I got this fabric at <a href="http://iloveneedlework.com/" target="_blank">Needlework</a> on James St N in Hamilton Ontario. I was drawn to it first by the bright colours, but the little bees hidden in the mystery fruit really sold me on it! <br />

I used one the exposed metal zippers from my Value Village purchase that will leave me with enough 15cm zippers to last a lifetime. I always feel triumphant when I can actually use one where it makes sense. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used black contrast binding (applied the wrong way on purpose, I used what was laying around) because I love the way the fabric has a heavy contrast outline in the pattern and wanted to highlight that.</div>

It was such a beautiful weekend, I spent a lot of time outdoors, strolling around the downtown. There is an antique market downtown in the city square which I love browsing through, although I rarely buy anything.</div>

I got a picture with the ferry, the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvopEMKAnCM" target="_blank">Wolfe Island Ferry</a> is actually out of commission right now for repairs, so this is actually the Amherstview Ferry, which most people agree is less nice.<br />

Working on this project reminded me of my first project I did when I got my sewing machine for my birthday in 2012. My family picked out a cotton that was shared my middle name as a kick starter (<a href="http://www.joeldewberry.com/pages/heirloom-citrine-quilting-fashion-weight" target="_blank">Joel Dewberry's Chrysanthemum Jade</a>, and I sewed the <a href="https://www.colettepatterns.com/sewing/sorbetto" target="_blank">Collette Sorbetto</a> top with it! I never really got much wear out of it, because I found it hit me in a weird spot. I have a long torso, so it was too short to look normal with regular rise pants, too short to tuck into a skirt, but too long to wear as a crop top. Finishing this Tate Top inspired me to pull it out of my closet and give it another chance.<br />
<br />
It served as a great reminder of how far I've come with my sewing. I get frustrated with myself sometimes when I can't get tiny details perfect on my garments, but ripping it out once more would ruin the fabric so I have to deal with it.<br />
<br />
This was the first time I worked with bias tape:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzidckgQtqPilUiB7Z6VUFIDSqYW24fBH6peTz8L6GF3rdKtT-Oa36l07yw0I0CGAga6ANJ30KWCTWEjxngAZWE6J2YxWTq0dWf3EhNpqCwtvRkzJVH0L6QaR2MHMEUDqyKsqSsgYw8rA/s1600/DSC07374.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzidckgQtqPilUiB7Z6VUFIDSqYW24fBH6peTz8L6GF3rdKtT-Oa36l07yw0I0CGAga6ANJ30KWCTWEjxngAZWE6J2YxWTq0dWf3EhNpqCwtvRkzJVH0L6QaR2MHMEUDqyKsqSsgYw8rA/s1600/DSC07374.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
I ended up shortening it so it hit the waistband of my "standing pants" and folding the neckline bias binding back once more so it was finished like this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-xZ8ywR9r8BSLh0Ii8VvAUxlfZnYZV0xbcc7gmVFDGf2vxzgr9uWxM_SUaqYBwc_w3RrrwCgzLcHJ6xev89ata1yNOKoHzN2h-EVq7_97tvje10NC3weid7lHoISaqwoXH7jFkxndDC4/s1600/DSC07375.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-xZ8ywR9r8BSLh0Ii8VvAUxlfZnYZV0xbcc7gmVFDGf2vxzgr9uWxM_SUaqYBwc_w3RrrwCgzLcHJ6xev89ata1yNOKoHzN2h-EVq7_97tvje10NC3weid7lHoISaqwoXH7jFkxndDC4/s1600/DSC07375.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
Where as my bias tape from the Tate top was much neater than my first go:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEYTcylW3QbFQNLEZVsyLZsv-9PD31PsC27wLbTMK9YgB5T1owCMANBWonlKWDKfESCp3GR5LQZLoPGF8lDas2OTSwSL_dGs1LhQbBfmS3FkRHjoldrc_acYbJfoUfrn0lkZrt3k1OtAU/s1600/DSC07373.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEYTcylW3QbFQNLEZVsyLZsv-9PD31PsC27wLbTMK9YgB5T1owCMANBWonlKWDKfESCp3GR5LQZLoPGF8lDas2OTSwSL_dGs1LhQbBfmS3FkRHjoldrc_acYbJfoUfrn0lkZrt3k1OtAU/s1600/DSC07373.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
This has been serving as a reminder that while there is still a ways for me to go in terms of getting my garments to look professional, I've also learned a lot and have improved so much and I shouldn't discount myself!<br />
<br />
I took a selfie in front of my quilting cotton trophy wall:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiycJCFfvv8ixeQViEkuyQZIR1q5YoFSlfClKv4FaiMssy-bXHrjifeet7425L_4ec2HP65fj8FhOwXAPEPlmwc_-nHYwtFe93Nt3_9Ya4qa50H7-vRZMiZO-9yhkpvKieKxLb0iTRWrg/s1600/DSC07434.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiycJCFfvv8ixeQViEkuyQZIR1q5YoFSlfClKv4FaiMssy-bXHrjifeet7425L_4ec2HP65fj8FhOwXAPEPlmwc_-nHYwtFe93Nt3_9Ya4qa50H7-vRZMiZO-9yhkpvKieKxLb0iTRWrg/s1600/DSC07434.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
And below you can see where the new hemline falls, a proper crop top! These are my "standing pants" because as soon as you sit down the waist band digs in SO BADLY. You're either standing or sitting with the button undone.<br />

My friends are interesting in getting into sewing, so I promised I'd help them out and we'd pick an easy pattern to go through together. Two of these friends have a pretty extreme waist to hip ratio (we try to balance things on one friend's butt, Kim Kardashian style), and a common complaint I get is that its really hard to find pencil skirts and dresses to fit their bodies. So when I saw the free (!!!) <a href="http://www.lekala.co/catalog/free%20patterns/5088" target="_blank">Lekala pattern #5088</a> three seamed pencil skirt, I knew it was the perfect pattern. With Lekala patterns, you input your measurements and a pattern is custom drafted for you and a pdf pattern is emailed to you 10 minutes later.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJzdPhw6sVnMHbWI0FouRCxYOBgOpoAw8pY1oE36JNAglvGQzNS6VU4ptoqlsVQWMkTQAjv5AM8gWNxVu1CWgozKhd9YTAV1qfmWT3PXe61FsmGQzyCJErvbhLizm3jZO0uL4pWi2WG-g/s1600/2015-03-22+18.03.30.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJzdPhw6sVnMHbWI0FouRCxYOBgOpoAw8pY1oE36JNAglvGQzNS6VU4ptoqlsVQWMkTQAjv5AM8gWNxVu1CWgozKhd9YTAV1qfmWT3PXe61FsmGQzyCJErvbhLizm3jZO0uL4pWi2WG-g/s1600/2015-03-22+18.03.30.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
The sewing party was very successful, one friend was having machine troubles so fell behind, but the rest of us all had some fit issues to work out so we finished at the same time! As wonderful as the personalized measurements seemed, something as form fitting as a pencil skirt is bound to need extra tweaks. Most people aren't perfectly conical like a dress form as expected, so we ended up needing to take off a inch or so here and there at the sides, and playing around with the darts to get the desired fit. I used a stretch cotton from the discount rack at Fabricland. <br />

All in all I'd consider it a successful day! Everyone came out with a snazzy skirt and some new sewing knowledge. Plus there was a dog to pet on our sewing breaks!<br />

I decided to make a matching crop top with the leftovers from my skirt, I used the <a href="http://workroomsocial.com/blog/tate-top/" target="_blank">Tate Top</a> pattern from <a href="http://workroomsocial.com/blog/tate-top/" target="_blank">Workroom Social</a>. I was drawn to this pattern because it uses cotton in the picture! I have a thing for quilting cotton, I can never pass up all the beautiful colours and patterns in the stores, and this small-yardage tank top could be the answer to my problem! A quick, wearable project that I can make in a bazillion fabrics!<br />

I missed the <a href="http://www.adaspragg.com/2014/07/23/see-sew-co-ords/" target="_blank">two piece set-acular</a> phenomenon that swept the blogosphere last summer, it was pre-blog for me, and I was also trying to pack up the hordes of stuff I accumulated in London. I didn't forget about it though! Its been in the back of my mind ever since, and I finally decided to act upon it.<br />

We also need to talk about the snow lingering around, its April in THREE DAYS, go away winter! I think I've been subconsciously choosing these ridiculous tropical prints for my winter sewing as a way to silently make a stand against winter. I'm so ready for the spring to arrive!<br />

The photos are so fascinating! I love seeing the technology that goes into the materials for my favourite past-time, and the colours in the photos are absolutely delicious. Doesn't this look like it should be cotton candy, not fabric??<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Back to business! This was my last sewing with non-purpose dress of 2015, first and last! (Hopefully)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg87qxB8pveEE75RZEBJMEnXDCdtIqqgkO6HOT5oNQ8et_vsdnUZ7g7SdYSFtyxbXYwc8IDJYBUM9QYxUptmnBEjAHjCaDFgSK_yp-95rDDhS01tS7n6ro3bgSw2PO1ZFqMr5sWX5zpS8/s1600/Untitled-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg87qxB8pveEE75RZEBJMEnXDCdtIqqgkO6HOT5oNQ8et_vsdnUZ7g7SdYSFtyxbXYwc8IDJYBUM9QYxUptmnBEjAHjCaDFgSK_yp-95rDDhS01tS7n6ro3bgSw2PO1ZFqMr5sWX5zpS8/s1600/Untitled-1.jpg" height="200" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I had just walked into fabricland, saw this gorgeous stuff on sale for $3 a meter (!!!) and had to have it, even though I didn't really have a plan for it. My original idea for it was to make a long collared shirt-dress with the white border at the bottom. However, I had a friend who was feeling a bit down in the dumps so I asked his opinion to get his mind off things. He's very into minimalist and edgy fashion and I thought he'd really like the fabric. He was very adamant that it should be a simple shift dress, and while I wasn't super feeling it, I didn't want to totally override his creative input. I put a pleat into the front to make it more interesting.<br />

I'm very glad I went with his advice! I'm in love with the way this dress turned out. I used the <a href="http://april-rhodes.com/collections/patternshop/products/the-staple-dress-pdf" target="_blank">Staple Dress</a> pattern from April Rhodes, with a few obvious adjustments. The most blaring: I didn't add the waist shirring. Another is I shortened the sleeves, and made the side edges more straight.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2AeN7gAjnRz56tDTj0T6b2KdmQHQ_0Sl5ScqykN5ePqSetXrEqDT1CDtDGEWLys7mhKgMA7_AwquKyiBLFOl8OBtSdKqyEex17pTIXgj3CX0_35JMSY1cDCtHbMl9r-2qTyvgIkJ_DQo/s1600/Screenshot+2015-03-19+17.43.17.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2AeN7gAjnRz56tDTj0T6b2KdmQHQ_0Sl5ScqykN5ePqSetXrEqDT1CDtDGEWLys7mhKgMA7_AwquKyiBLFOl8OBtSdKqyEex17pTIXgj3CX0_35JMSY1cDCtHbMl9r-2qTyvgIkJ_DQo/s1600/Screenshot+2015-03-19+17.43.17.png" height="400" width="276" /></a></div>
You'll also notice the neck hole is smaller. I wanted a high neckline in the design stage, and then for some reason completely forgot how to do that. So I pin it at the back! It makes a small pleat at the back, and since there is one at the front it makes sense. I plan on getting a nifty brooch specifically for this purpose.<br />
<br />
When I uploaded all the pictures, I noticed two thing:<br />
1) This dress is a lot shorter than I thought (I have no full length mirrors in my apartment) and I will be wearing it with tights from now on.<br />
2) My eyes are closed in almost every shot, my boyfriend is NOT a stellar photographer.<br />
<br />
Without the pin in the back, this is what the dress looks like:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Another fun feature of the dress is I can wear it backwards!<br />

<br />
I actually almost think I like it better this way, and I don't have to fiddle with a pin to get it to sit high on my neck.<br />
<br />
I have also been playing with a new photo editor, so here I've added some palm trees to distract from the dirty snow on the ground:<br />

I absolutely fell in love with this pattern while I was living in London, its a 1920's inspired cocoon coat from <a href="http://ralphpink-patterns.com/product/rp007a-b/" target="_blank">Ralph Pink</a>. I absolutely love 1920s and 30s fashion, and was looking for a project that would challenge me and I could learn from, this seemed to fit the bill.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1tk5-g2ZD0kWKLbv-bP2E3dFwAkIgU9eC4S0YAZM1p70waZhSFMJ3cofAJfXbIfXJL4-FzaBdWXGM7HOLlO1iYkWl7ptjltmdPmgQnsNCdeTW9hyphenhyphenoLaqwudCm_IQ061H8H3OA8pqbbIM/s1600/COCOON-COAT-OV.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1tk5-g2ZD0kWKLbv-bP2E3dFwAkIgU9eC4S0YAZM1p70waZhSFMJ3cofAJfXbIfXJL4-FzaBdWXGM7HOLlO1iYkWl7ptjltmdPmgQnsNCdeTW9hyphenhyphenoLaqwudCm_IQ061H8H3OA8pqbbIM/s1600/COCOON-COAT-OV.gif" height="320" width="104" /></a></div>
I decided to make the cropped version of the coat, as I'd only seen one other make from this pattern pop up google, and that was a long one from <a href="http://www.thewallinna.com/2014/04/escaping-with-my-cocoon-coat.html" target="_blank">The Wallinna</a>. I got a good start on it while I was over there, I bought some wool suiting and beautiful printed lining in Walthamstow market, this was the most amount of money I'd spent on a garment as the fabrics are quite good quality. Unfortunately life happened and I started packing up to come home and didn't get around to finishing it off until very recently...when I found out this pattern fits very very small. Like I could hulk rip out the back of it. The material was hard to iron so the coat is pretty wonky in the pictures below:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC3oUagkonXty2ef5WnJ6P5NTBSFUq7vQWl5SRgrO4CHinJRA3IJyU_NI9UuCXUq_XPiKdsTN0J-0DIqdhX8xfmihM6LL7nsF-ksvg35zAHYj0cwbiUNKu3i5L_WbAT4wMNEpNSAFsCoY/s1600/DSC07226.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC3oUagkonXty2ef5WnJ6P5NTBSFUq7vQWl5SRgrO4CHinJRA3IJyU_NI9UuCXUq_XPiKdsTN0J-0DIqdhX8xfmihM6LL7nsF-ksvg35zAHYj0cwbiUNKu3i5L_WbAT4wMNEpNSAFsCoY/s1600/DSC07226.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiSL3PHsn9wGJe_vdjHhJEt1FjrNqoPWMJ-z4r21KUfDkXs4G_aSNwWpyELTnz0VC_c5sKrlLSGz3voT5jONWpLu3XFLappncM6WcGTraCGv7zDbjMpNjPe8aBrPdQWp_Ku1Z8tdCK41s/s1600/DSC07231.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiSL3PHsn9wGJe_vdjHhJEt1FjrNqoPWMJ-z4r21KUfDkXs4G_aSNwWpyELTnz0VC_c5sKrlLSGz3voT5jONWpLu3XFLappncM6WcGTraCGv7zDbjMpNjPe8aBrPdQWp_Ku1Z8tdCK41s/s1600/DSC07231.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I got a size 8-10 UK, and I KNOW I am that size, I even double checked with the measurement chart on the website but this coat is super tight on my arms and across the back. Another weird fit issue is that the scoop at the bottom of the coat hits directly at the center of my butt instead of underneath it, so it looks super silly. It's definitely too small. I've also noticed that the 8-10 is no longer available on the site so I guess I am not the only one who had issues with it. I also am pretty sure that wool suiting used to be a recommend material for the pattern on the site, but its also no longer there.<br />
<br />
With respect to the instructions, I found them a bit unclear. This was the first jacket I'd made and I got the impression that it was assumed there was prior knowledge of jacket construction. There were a couple things that I felt when A to C and I had to guess B. It also didn't help that the numbers for the instructions were not in proper sequential order.<br />
<br />
I omitted the top stitching from the pattern instructions because the seaming was virtually invisible against the black and white check. Look how fun the lining is!<br />

LUCKILY, I have tiny friends! I am glad that at least someone gets to wear this coat. I think it is more Mallory's style anyways.<br />

All in all, its a very beautiful pattern and I wish I could make it again, but I would have to buy it again in the size up :/ Theoretically, next time I would make it in a lighter silk fabric so it is more drapey, and make the longer version to avoid the scoop hitting at a weird place on my butt ( I know I have a long torso) I'm just happy someone gets to wear the fun bird print!<br />

<br />
I often buy baggy style clothing in the name of ease and comfort, then feel like I am out in public in my night gown. That was the situation with the dress below, I bought it because it was fun and whimsical but it turned out I looked like I was only my way to a pajama party.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiTLQalE0AuhontHgI7kO0bOVK7FrluE-wa700oc4r0jGQo-2YNlVa49PNdDimBUnXyWcMlBjWFnYvL8Yom7PDM1rt3xxqkWtpVNwj5iex178EA_m_Jyfr-GJ-FFpWQMpEPLQjveQVGwM/s1600/bat_wing_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiTLQalE0AuhontHgI7kO0bOVK7FrluE-wa700oc4r0jGQo-2YNlVa49PNdDimBUnXyWcMlBjWFnYvL8Yom7PDM1rt3xxqkWtpVNwj5iex178EA_m_Jyfr-GJ-FFpWQMpEPLQjveQVGwM/s1600/bat_wing_1.jpg" height="320" width="207" /></a></div>
<br />
I still like the whimsical part of the garment, so I am going to re-purpose it into something a bit more bat wing-ish and fitted in the hips.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnWItb1-dZEo3TzGSi21LgkmBOrEa-k8Bj7SYSKUtkVuIBvAeKKBnv_BsgaNaG4Y4Xeno83fxTGU1BZukEND-_bB5rLEQaYD3n2OiUEDWBKm6bReUNkXG8eRNbBAd0_YLytPynIIdf9NI/s1600/bat_wing_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnWItb1-dZEo3TzGSi21LgkmBOrEa-k8Bj7SYSKUtkVuIBvAeKKBnv_BsgaNaG4Y4Xeno83fxTGU1BZukEND-_bB5rLEQaYD3n2OiUEDWBKm6bReUNkXG8eRNbBAd0_YLytPynIIdf9NI/s1600/bat_wing_2.jpg" height="224" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
You can re-purpose any dress into a bat wing top, great for garments that no longer fit in the waist but still hold some mystique. All you will need is some additional fabric to make the sleeves and waist/hip and arm bands.<br />
<br />
NEED TO PURCHASE: You will need 1 meter of 4 way stretch fabric for the sleeves and a half meter for the waist/hip and sleeve band.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMwMDDnpGc2prhyphenhyphenU1u6fzKc8_8qHQZOIXNo6AD-xBnOcJvHwPrI4-HLfglYos-d-V437S_HMH7LwQcTQK9XvCknWKOQ6mqHxnZp1DiU_Yb3yTp-pR2tbCWEIzy4kNcNDDQj4GfcBQcYHI/s1600/bat_wing_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMwMDDnpGc2prhyphenhyphenU1u6fzKc8_8qHQZOIXNo6AD-xBnOcJvHwPrI4-HLfglYos-d-V437S_HMH7LwQcTQK9XvCknWKOQ6mqHxnZp1DiU_Yb3yTp-pR2tbCWEIzy4kNcNDDQj4GfcBQcYHI/s1600/bat_wing_5.jpg" height="262" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
STEP 1: You will need to cut 2 bat wing pattern pieces. I used some large sketching newsprint, but you can use what you have on hand. These pieces you can adjust based on your height and hip size. This pattern will fit a 5' 8" person with a hip size of 40". The "bat top front/back" pattern piece is 8" wide at the top, 4" wide at the bottom, 29" on one side and 26", with a curve at the top of the pattern piece, 4" in and 3" down for the neck.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifCT0UdWwO0LNGpVq2xlksCrZXA75D1jEZCo7kQAcGZp1K77P-RQ3dRLAXho-rD7liLl5T-1is7MN6_dI_BH0xxy4bJxDv6es1_38mXAgxZsan5oLh7Pwyd8XKeo5pQEzwckxC27fJMNs/s1600/bat_wing_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifCT0UdWwO0LNGpVq2xlksCrZXA75D1jEZCo7kQAcGZp1K77P-RQ3dRLAXho-rD7liLl5T-1is7MN6_dI_BH0xxy4bJxDv6es1_38mXAgxZsan5oLh7Pwyd8XKeo5pQEzwckxC27fJMNs/s1600/bat_wing_3.jpg" height="320" width="122" /></a></div>
<br />
STEP 2: The "bat wing top sleeves" pattern piece is in the basic shape of a right angle triangle, where the right angle sides are 29" and 16" and the hypotenuse is approx. 33". You are going to cut off the non 90 degree angle points of your triangle to accommodate for a 6" hip opening (the front and back piece account for most of the hip opening) and a 5" sleeve opening.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfwbk438a037pnvVc01yBVKe3EBlOGxgoszFEu8DpoT2WZoRxR-tr6szPH1IJxa904ZFr0-Z-jQWfKAsMpxCKV4LixM0IV6huyaIfGTYiaD5ejjjLRJySo9FYzUygR8CNsiJo4WlQY3Yg/s1600/bat_wing_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfwbk438a037pnvVc01yBVKe3EBlOGxgoszFEu8DpoT2WZoRxR-tr6szPH1IJxa904ZFr0-Z-jQWfKAsMpxCKV4LixM0IV6huyaIfGTYiaD5ejjjLRJySo9FYzUygR8CNsiJo4WlQY3Yg/s1600/bat_wing_4.jpg" height="320" width="262" /></a></div>
<br />
STEP 3: Place your sleeve piece on your fabric and cut, flip the pattern piece and cut the other sleeve. You should end up with 4 cut pieces.<br />

<br />
This is a variation on the last post of a silk scarf made with re-purposed men's ties. This one has some interesting lines and can be worn in a variety of ways, but the one displayed I think is the most interesting.<br />
<br />
<div>
STEPS 1: Materials, you will need:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. Half meter of silk, approx. 18 inches (or 45 cm) and 54 inches wide. Use a silk that has some body as it is easier to sew with.</div>
<div>
2. You will need 2 men's neck ties that match or contrast the half meter of silk.</div>
<div>
3. Seam ripper, scissors, thread, etc.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmHPzX9F6ppFGSv7QiJ1sfgqEHp70MTh9FhiBbolcurxcs3OXihN0-GFOfTdSqiCS_3cFy6i8rCPheNwqokbp-LzyyLq99X0jkck7LoeWFlu9zAwZdH27FAHbPfT5sCC_2kcJ6abHI_Cg/s1600/tie_red_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmHPzX9F6ppFGSv7QiJ1sfgqEHp70MTh9FhiBbolcurxcs3OXihN0-GFOfTdSqiCS_3cFy6i8rCPheNwqokbp-LzyyLq99X0jkck7LoeWFlu9zAwZdH27FAHbPfT5sCC_2kcJ6abHI_Cg/s1600/tie_red_1.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
STEP 2: Seam rip both ties so they are open flat and remove the cloth facing inside the tie. Do not seam rip the end of the tie, keep the end points intact. Iron both ties flat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVhtSejBPIeSxF2J-CBjIKi_6lHuFJTzZP1IU6xL4ym3dLlFgPV3aY_4NiIKPm7bBFTfD3fvOfvFDoweHfwR47jWOAZjbeTmIFTWXoTbQCUN95akPQ03Y_MOLiztiOuPklXCzzwmCYHrk/s1600/tie_red_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVhtSejBPIeSxF2J-CBjIKi_6lHuFJTzZP1IU6xL4ym3dLlFgPV3aY_4NiIKPm7bBFTfD3fvOfvFDoweHfwR47jWOAZjbeTmIFTWXoTbQCUN95akPQ03Y_MOLiztiOuPklXCzzwmCYHrk/s1600/tie_red_2.jpg" height="169" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
STEP 3: Iron the silk and cut in half so you have 2 equal pieces approximately 27 in. x 18 in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
STEP 4: Fold the 2 ties in half, wrong sides together then pin each tie to the longest side of one piece of the silk, raw edges touching. The pointed end of the tie should be slightly longer than your silk pieces, take note of where the finished end of the tie is positioned, this will become important when you do your finishing touches.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTNpuUUE35N2zSyy08EJ4n6zUi2-nXAYYbMUocarZlqRBZxHbU0mVo_4JSpvHPIE9Tf1mQy9cDgu9BzhU2njJCsSeU_axnQ7EPYainFELFLU3XwbR6RA8QjDUGsooojOr_EN7VWMPtoYQ/s1600/tie_red_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTNpuUUE35N2zSyy08EJ4n6zUi2-nXAYYbMUocarZlqRBZxHbU0mVo_4JSpvHPIE9Tf1mQy9cDgu9BzhU2njJCsSeU_axnQ7EPYainFELFLU3XwbR6RA8QjDUGsooojOr_EN7VWMPtoYQ/s1600/tie_red_3.jpg" height="270" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
STEP 5: Sew each tie to the side of the silk, where you have it pinned, do not sew the finished end of the tie to the silk. Use about a half inch seam allowance, the silk tends to fray, so better the be safe than sorry.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
STEP 6: Place the second piece of silk directly over top of the ties/silk piece and line up longest sides. Sew the second piece of silk onto the first piece, right sides of silk facing. Your ties will be inside the two pieces of silk.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
STEP 7: Sew one end of the silk scarf to a point to emulate the tie ends. Be careful not to sew the ends of the ties into the silk scarf ends. Turn the scarf right side out and iron flat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
STEP 8: Hand sew the open end of the scarf into a point as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
STEP 9: If you wish you can install a snap to the end of the silk points for convenience when wearing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

SOMETHING BLUE</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
I am always looking for a way to make a fun new scarf out of beautiful silks I come across at vintage or second hand shops. I love the pattern and texts of men's ties and am looking for ideas to re-purpose them. I mostly get the thumbs down from my daughters on my tie creations and they have in the past begged me not to wear my tie outfits out of the house. These tie projects are pretty safe and might not even be recognized as being ties in a previous life, well not the first one any way.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
STEPS 1: Materials, you will need:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. Half meter of silk, approx. 18 inches (or 45 cm) and 45 inches wide</div>
<div>
2. Although the image below shows only one, you will need 2 men's neck ties</div>
<div>
3. Seam ripper, scissors, etc.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoYaAdbq3UNt1X8T2PY3Sd3wtE32AQiWSHt_Fgb1xVFy_jz1b_pFYDGjwFWMON6FQqL4LzrIm9CJrJTL4UPSdjq4d_9hp1qmaLMnBnqvVPJWtJbvByIx8n-8henIOqLgWaLoXeUKVePiE/s1600/tie_blue_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoYaAdbq3UNt1X8T2PY3Sd3wtE32AQiWSHt_Fgb1xVFy_jz1b_pFYDGjwFWMON6FQqL4LzrIm9CJrJTL4UPSdjq4d_9hp1qmaLMnBnqvVPJWtJbvByIx8n-8henIOqLgWaLoXeUKVePiE/s1600/tie_blue_1.jpg" height="234" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
STEP 2: Seam rip both ties so they are open flat and remove the cloth facing inside the tie.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKLqVtyYAkTVM3YuJJPWEtvngIPJZlhnPHgMmmd8HEWk5Xxw9Nlus_QFP8IpSjvbHwGM4o6WvXMzV20w1xibw3LnvgoJp8b89-ssRuxTZfKJbp8Jr-N_72c1o4yCTdLIW2c-rv970TjAA/s1600/tie_blue_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKLqVtyYAkTVM3YuJJPWEtvngIPJZlhnPHgMmmd8HEWk5Xxw9Nlus_QFP8IpSjvbHwGM4o6WvXMzV20w1xibw3LnvgoJp8b89-ssRuxTZfKJbp8Jr-N_72c1o4yCTdLIW2c-rv970TjAA/s1600/tie_blue_2.jpg" height="265" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
STEP 3: Iron both ties and cut 2 each ties in 18 inch lengths trying to get the maximum width for each piece.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
STEP 4: Iron the silk and cut in half so you have 2 equal pieces approximately 22 in. x 18 in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
STEP 5: Sew the 2 widest tie pieces together and on either side sew the 2 silk pieces.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
STEP 6: To the end of the silk pieces sew the 2 remaining tie pieces.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
STEP 7: Fold the finished product in half and sew right sides facing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
STEP 8: Sew one end of the scarf, turn the scarf right side out and iron.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
STEP 9: Hand sew the open end of the scarf.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
STEP 10: Add snaps to the corner ends of the scarf for ease when wearing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is a dress/top pattern and I was sold on it instantly, for 2 reasons:<br />
<br />
<b>Muffin Top be Gone: </b>It has side block panels to camouflage muffin tops or back bra strap bulges.<br />
<br />
<b>Re-use Factor High: </b>There are small pattern pieces which leave me open to re-use clothes I am tired of wearing but still like and have life left in them.<br />
<br />
I made 3 versions of this pattern, one dress and 2 longer tops, the tops can be worn with tights. I modified the neck line on all three version because when I asked my husband what he thought, during the sewing process, he said it looked like a scuba suit. Ask an honest question and get an honest answer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPLChBc4HT9knxWC4P3OnKtirgMi3RKL1evaGhOvVMwF4TUVMdYKv0uslz51tWOniLHi5l_2jE4rwy0ThfNHWl0Qe0TL3k7fgSBwwlPKQLgSb9eJjm58JNiXLpz3JVnf6nZ4LvefgxVcw/s1600/scuba_dress_660.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPLChBc4HT9knxWC4P3OnKtirgMi3RKL1evaGhOvVMwF4TUVMdYKv0uslz51tWOniLHi5l_2jE4rwy0ThfNHWl0Qe0TL3k7fgSBwwlPKQLgSb9eJjm58JNiXLpz3JVnf6nZ4LvefgxVcw/s1600/scuba_dress_660.jpg" height="380" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Version 1:</b> I reused fabric I that was leftover from a previous project on the top sleeve fronts. I love this fabric it is a 60's design, crisp and fun.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Version 2:</b> I have a habit of buying more than one item of something I really like, so I bought 2 pair of workout tights, which in hind sight, weren't that great. So I decided to use one pair for my version 2 of the longer top. I used the waist band as the neck, which worked really well, it is finished nicely and I can put a draw string in it if I want. I used the leg bottoms for the ends of the sleeves and the legs for the side panels. For the top front sleeve I re-used a tank top that I had previously made but wasn't fond of because the pattern was too busy. The pattern is much more subtle in small doses. I will of course never where the matching tights with the top, for fear of looking like a toddler.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u>Pattern modifications</u>: I made the top a bit longer than the pattern calls for and made a band about 4 inches wide (cut 8 inches and fold in half) to sew to the bottom of the long top. It come just above finger tip height. I also added a detail to the back of the top because it turned out to be a bit tight around the waist. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR66S7hWEqwvaQn3vkfs5h6C7d0NhFpzQYOcj7s7It2yrfu_JVa2vRhvkrtczVVL8k7Ra2gDC6Zg76Oame7smWcuOanhNzLkII6w8MG_C0u53A65X7PHPok1p-D8ZaZ1iY4G93yOlMjU4/s1600/P1000409.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR66S7hWEqwvaQn3vkfs5h6C7d0NhFpzQYOcj7s7It2yrfu_JVa2vRhvkrtczVVL8k7Ra2gDC6Zg76Oame7smWcuOanhNzLkII6w8MG_C0u53A65X7PHPok1p-D8ZaZ1iY4G93yOlMjU4/s1600/P1000409.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Version 3:</b> For the last top I re-used a dress I have worn too many times to be seen in it again but it was great quality wool knit. The dress skirt I used for the side panels back and front, the top front sleeve was a tank top that again was too much pattern print for an entire top. </div>
